Things to Do in Orange Beach & Gulf Shores, Alabama

The towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are nestled along the Gulf Coast of Alabama, amid miles of white sand beaches and sparkling emerald waters. These areas are a popular tourist destination because of the warm, tropical climate and a variety of attractions. Water sports include swimming, sailing, fishing, snorkeling, parasailing and scuba diving. Whatever your tastes are, the Gulf Coast has something for every active and health-conscious visitor.

Visit a Park

Spending the afternoon at a park is a great way to find a variety of outdoor recreational activities. The Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores features a number of amenities that offer just that, including picnic areas, fishing, beaches, camping facilities and many distinctive trails, where visitors can enjoy hiking, jogging, biking and nature walks. For example, the Bear Creek Trail used to be a paved road that led to Orange Beach, and it is marked with several signs that identify local trees and shrubs. The Alligator Marsh Trail runs along a small canal where hikers can see wildlife such as small alligators, turtles and frogs.

Beaches

Beaches are always a fun way to enjoy some outdoor recreation as well as water sports. The area has its fair share of beaches including Romar Beach in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shores. Gulf Shores Public Beach has more than 1,700 feet of Gulf beachfront and boardwalk, and includes beach attendants, open air pavilions, swimming and picnic areas. Romar Beach has free parking and offers plenty of room for swimming, picnics or a stroll on the beach.

Golf

Orange Beach offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a round of golf at the Orange Beach Golf Center. The driving range has 30 grass tees and 10 covered mat tees. Guests can choose to walk the course or rent a pull-cart or electronic cart. The course features lush greens, paved trails, wooden bridges, fountains and several ponds, all designed to provide a challenging game. The driving range is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the golf course and pro shop are open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sport Fishing

Sport fishing can be quite a workout. Orange Beach Fishing Charters offers excursions at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and features a 40-foot boat with a 350 horsepower engine that can carry up to 30 passengers. Top of the line equipment and tackle are also provided as well as bait and fishing licenses. The boat features an air-conditioned cabin, bathroom and bunks. Guests can book four-hour to 18-hour trips for species such as a tuna, cobia, snapper, grouper, marlin and triggerfish.

Water Parks

Water parks are a great way to get plenty of sun, fresh air and physical exercise. Waterville USA in Gulf Shores is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the end of May throughout the end of August. Visitors can enjoy rides such as the North Shore Wavepool, the Flowrider, Rainbow Falls, the Jet Stream and Crystal Waters Lazy River. Other activities at Waterville include miniature golf and an arcade. The park also features several on-site snack bars and cafes.
