Wooden Vs. Metal Bats

The debate over whether or not metal bats were a batter option that wooden bats has been ongoing since metal bats first appeared in the 1920s. Wooden bats were created by the Louisville Slugger Co. during the 19th century. The original bats were made of ash. Professional baseball players use wooden bats during the games, while metal bats are used by many nonprofessional leagues. No matter what you are playing, the choice of bat often comes down to nothing more than preference.

Types

The most popular wooden bats are made of maple or ash. Metal bats are made from aluminum, alloys or a combination of materials. Composite bats can include Kevlar, graphite, carbon or any mixture of the three. Alloys are simply a mixture of different aluminum types. Metal bats are hollow while wooden bats are solid.

Power

A metal bat weighs less than a bat made of wood, allowing the batters to swing the bat more quickly. According to a study at Kettering University, a metal bat can add up to 10 mph to the speed of the hit ball. This added speed increases the amount of power of the ball, leading to more balls hit into the outfield and home runs.

Price

A metal bat ranges in price from $100 to $400 as of June 2010, while a bat made of wood will run anywhere from $50 to $150. A wooden bat is less expensive because it breaks more frequently and is less durable. While they may cost less, a player using wooden bats may incur an increase of the overall costs when the bats need to be replaced.

Weight

According to Beabetterhitter.com, metal bat will typically weigh 28 or 29 oz., while a wooden bat weighs anywhere from 20 to 35 oz. If you are looking to increase your bat speed, the difference between the two is very significant. It is important to know that wood bats absorb the impact of hitting the ball so you won't feel as much impact in your hands. An aluminum bat, however, will give off distinct reverberations in your hands, which could leave them sore if you are not used to using a metal bat.

Benefits

A metal bat is more exciting than a wood bat. They are more durable, flashier and stronger. They also make a distinctive sound when the ball is hit. However, professional baseball used wooden bats for all players. By practicing with a wooden bat, you are able to use the equipment that the professionals use and will also have the ability to tailor your game to that of the professionals. There is really no wrong choice in choosing one or the other. Just try both and select the one that you are most comfortable with.
