Frizzy hair is caused by water that becomes trapped under the hair cuticle, resulting in a ruffled and frazzled appearance. The cuticles, which can be imagined as the shingles of a house slightly overlapping one another, become infused with moisture so the cuticle no longer lays flat. While store-bought serums and hair products can give a sleeker look, home remedies can give you the same results without spending money on products that may or may not work to tame your frizzy hair.

Cold Water

When you shower in very hot water the pores of your hair open to receive moisture. Unfortunately, after you step out of the shower, hair absorbs too much moisture and the pores stay open, causing frizzing. Rinsing your hair in cool water closes the hair shaft and makes it less susceptible to frizz, says HairBoutique.com. This method is also applied to styling; once you've finished blowing your hair dry with heat, press down the cool air button and give your hair a final blast to seal in smoothness and lock out excess moisture.

Dryer Sheet

If you are on the go and notice that your hair has already begun to frizz, you might not have time to dash back upstairs to apply an anti-frizz serum. Grab a dryer sheet out of your laundry room for the same effect in less time, hairstylist Ted Gibson tells "Elle" magazine . The fabric softener on the laundry sheet clings to the hair shaft and weighs it down to reduce the amount of frizz and flyaways you experience. Slip a few dryer sheets into your work bag for anti-frizz treatment all day.

Home Conditioner

A weekly deep conditioning treatment can infuse your hair with hydration so it is less likely to feel dry and susceptible to frizzing. You don't need an expensive hot oil treatment, but rather a few items from your fridge known for moisturizing properties. Combine the flesh of one avocado, one egg and 2 tbsp. olive oil and mix into a paste. Apply the conditioner to dry hair, and wrap in plastic wrap. If possible, sit somewhere warm and humid so the hair cuticles open and the conditioner can become infused in the hair. Rinse out after 30 minutes.

Lip Balm and Moisturizer

Think of the amount of times that you apply lip balm or hand moisturizer each day. Each time you do so, you're missing out on an easy and quick opportunity to tame frizzy hair. When you slick on a non-flavored, petroleum-based lip balm, rub a little on your fingertips and run them through your hair to add weight and smooth down frizz, much in the way a pomade would. When you apply moisturizer to your hands, there's always a little excess. Massage the cream into your hands, and then run your hands over your hair to deposit the rest for sleeker locks.
