Everybody experiences sadness, but children, teens and adults who suffer from depression experience overwhelming sadness and irritability that affects their ability to succeed at work and school and maintain healthy relationships.

Signs and Symptoms

Helpguide.org reports that symptoms of depressive disorders include issues eating and sleeping, difficulty concentrating, hopelessness, loss of pleasure, fatigue and unexplained physical complaints.

Types

Depression can come in five different forms including major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, psychotic depression, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Causes

There isn't one specific cause of depression. Factors such as abnormal levels of neurotransmitters and hormones, genetics, life events and trauma can contribute to developing a depressive disorder.

Treatment

Treatment can help reduce the symptoms of depression. Depending on your level of depression, medication, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy or a psychiatric hospitalization may be indicated.

Warning

If you suffer from a depressive disorder, you may have thoughts of suicide. Signs of suicidal thoughts include saying goodbye, talking about death, giving away prized possessions and reckless behavior. If you experience suicidal ideation seek immediate, professional help.
