Testosterone is a key hormone that the body produces naturally and that is necessary for healthy development and function of male sexual organs and characteristics. Testosterone cream is applied topically and supplies the body with the hormone when it cannot produce it naturally, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Physicians often prescribe topical testosterone for individuals suffering from infertility, male hypogonadism and decreased muscle mass due to low testosterone.
Infertility
Low testosterone in men can lead to a decrease in sexual ability and infertility, according to research at the NIH. The main symptom of male infertility includes the inability to conceive children due to hormonal imbalances. Other symptoms include problems with sexual function such as delayed ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and low sex drives. In certain cases where decreased levels of testosterone cause male infertility, physicians recommend hormone replacement therapy such as topical testosterone creams, according to the Mayo Clinic. Testosterone cream treatment can improve sperm count and promote healthy fertility.
Male Hypogonadism
Male hypogonadism is a condition in which the body does not produce healthy levels of the hormone testosterone, according to the Mayo Clinic. This disorder affects both adult males and adolescent boys and is characterized by an array of complications due to low testosterone. The Mayo Clinic reports that topical testosterone cream can restore healthy sexual function, improve energy levels and prevent bone loss in male hypogonadism. Hormone replacement is used as a treatment for hypogonadism because men suffer from decreased muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, infertility and loss of bone mass. The testosterone cream is rubbed into the skin, lower abdomen or shoulder and men report an increase of energy, sex drive and well-being.
Muscle Mass
Low levels of the hormone testosterone is associated with increased body fat levels, decreased lean body mass and decreased muscle strength, according to a study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and published in the August 1999 issue of "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism." The double blind randomized study observed the effect of topical testosterone on body composition and muscle strength in 108 men over the age of 65. The results from the study reported that individuals treated with testosterone noticed significantly decreased fat mass and increased lean muscle mass compared to the placebo group.
Side Effects
Topical testosterone use is very effective and may cause side effects, according to the NIH. Symptoms of breast enlargement, acne, hair loss, depression and dry skin are common side effects associated with testosterone cream.
