While video games are a fun way to relax and de-stress, some health professionals have suggested that devoting many hours to such games is a contributing factor to obesity. This is a possibility, as most video games do involve little to no movement outside of the hands. However, many new fitness video games are being released that engage players and provide a full body workout that is more entertaining than your average day at the gym.

Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit Plus is an exercise game for the Nintendo Wii system. This game is quite comprehensive, with five training modes: Yoga, Balance, Strength Training, Aerobics and Training Plus. Wii Fit Plus can also assess your current level of fitness and provide progress checks along the way by taking your body mass index (BMI) or a special measurement called Wii Fit Age. The Wii Fit Age calculates a number based on your real age and your Wii Fit results.

EA Sports Active

According to MSNBC, EA Sports Active is Wii Fit's biggest competition. The workout simulation game features consultation from personal trainer Bob Greene and comes with a leg strap and resistance band. The game offers 25 drills and exercises for athletic, aerobic and strength training workouts. EA Sports Active also features a virtual personal trainer to track your progress and assess goals.

Active Life Outdoor Challenge

This Nintendo-Wii only title is one of the top picks from fitness magazine Best Health. The game features activities involving running and jumping that engage your whole body. But you're not just exercising for nothing - Active Life Outdoor Challenge integrates the movements into sports games such as kayaking and other activities. Best Health praised the game for its ability to burn fat thanks to short, intense movements.

DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party 2

This iteration of the popular dance game is available for the Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation and Microsoft XBox 360. Best Health points out that the game has academic research supporting its claims of improving fitness. Hottest Party 2 keeps track of calories burned and keeps you motivated with performance ratings and encouraging comments.
