A dry cough is one that does not produce mucus. Instead, the throat is often dry and sore and the chest becomes painful from coughing, explains the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A number of illnesses and health concerns can cause this type of cough. An over-the-counter cough suppressant can stop the body's reflex to cough. Home remedies can relieve the discomfort from the cough as well as reduce the frequency.
Step 1
Place a kettle of water onto the stove and heat it.
Step 2
When steam begins coming from the kettle, place your face near the steam but not directly into it. Inhale deeply through the nose and mouth to bring the warm mist into your lungs. The moist air can calm an inflamed larynx. This effect can be replicated with a humidifier or a hot steamy shower.
Step 3
Remove the kettle from the stove and pour the hot water into the mug. Insert the herbal tea bag, peppermint leaves or eucalyptus leaves and allow it to steep for five to 10 minutes. Eucalyptus and peppermint leaves and oils can calm a sore throat, dry cough and help break up congestion, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Step 4
Stir in a teaspoon or two of honey. MayoClinic.com points out that even when taken alone, honey is as effective in suppressing a cough as many over-the-counter cough suppressants.
Step 5
Sip the tea after it has cooled. Repeat this process as often as relief is needed.
