According to Elmhurst College of Illinois, the chemical reactions that maintain organisms alive and functioning are called metabolism. The two types of metabolism are anabolism, which refers to the synthesis of nutrients required for cellular health; and catabolism, which is the energy obtained by the breakdown of molecules needed for energy. Certain herbs can stimulate the catabolism part of metabolism, stimulating the body to breakdown molecules faster, thus increasing your metabolic rate. Examples of these herbs include cayenne pepper, ginger and green tea. Always consult your primary physician before taking herbs, if you are taking any type of medication.
Cayenne Pepper
Botanically known as Capsicum annuum, cayenne pepper is used to stimulate your digestive process, which increases your body's metabolism, says herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in her book "Family Herbal - A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health and Vitality." Gladstar notes that cayenne pepper has carminative properties, which according to Simon Mills, reduce gas in the intestines, in his book "The Dictionary of Modern Herbalism." It also stimulates blood circulation and relieves constipation.
Cayenne pepper is strong, and you only need 1/10 tsp.of cayenne pepper powder or less for a cup of tea. It is a safe herb and can be taken daily.
Green Tea
Grean tea, known botanically as Camellia sinenis, increases metabolism, helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels and lowers cholesterol, according to nutritional counselor Phyllis Balch in her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing, the A-to-Z Guide to Supplements." It is thought to have potential as an aid for weight loss, and it benefits anabolism due to its high mineral contents, including phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium and manganese, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and C. Green tea also contains amino acids needed by every cell in your body.
Balch notes that due to green tea's caffeine content, it should be avoided by individuals who suffer from anxiety and irregular heart beat as well as pregnant and nursing women.
Ginger
Known botanically as Zingiber officinale, ginger has rubefacient properties, which means it increases blood circulation in your body, consquently increasing your metabolism. According the book "The New Holistic Herbal" by herbalist David Hoffmann, it also promotes gastric secretion and helps reduce colic and flatulence.
Hoffmann recommends adding 1 1/2 tsp. freshly grated ginger root to a cup of hot water and letting it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Ginger is a safe herb and can be used whenever you need it.
