Cheating is the ultimate betrayal in a committed relationship. According to Psychology Today, at least 65 percent of males and 50 percent of females admit to sexual infidelity at least once in their life. The convenience of the Internet makes cheating easier than ever, found a University of Florida study. If your gut says your significant other is cheating, look for the early warnings signs, but remember that these signs do not confirm an affair.

Secret Communication

Secret communication may be one of the first signs to tip you off to an affair. When you walk into the room, he may quickly close his laptop or switch screens because he doesn't want you to see what he was typing. When his phone rings, he jumps to answer it and goes into another room to talk. He receives late night phone calls and will not allow you to use his phone because he doesn't want you seeing his call history.

Busy Schedule

"I'm working late" is often an excuse a cheating spouse gives to cover up her affair, but she may fill her schedule with a number of errands and appointments. If you find your spouse suddenly volunteers to do things she normally wouldn't, such as take the car into the shop, or she suddenly has an interest in art, driving across town to take a once-a-week painting class, she may be using this time to sneak around.

Private Purchases

An affair may be costly if he's wining and dining his lady on the side. You may notice unexplained purchases or frequent cash withdrawals from your bank account. If he's told you he's been working late, but won't show you his paycheck, he may be hiding the fact that he's received no overtime. He may go as far as to open a private checking account. If he was previously open about money issues and is now mum on the subject, you may have cause for concern.

Different Behaviors

If she's cheating, her mood and even her appearance may change. She no longer gets irritated when you leave your clothes on the floor or don't rinse off your dishes. She may be extra sweet to you to make up for her infidelity. Suddenly, she's coloring her hair, wearing makeup and perfume, but doesn't seem to be doing these things for you. Instead of telling you all about her day, she is overly interested in your day and avoids specifics when you press her about that project at work or her night class.

Car Changes

You probably know the state your man keeps his car in. If you sit down in the passenger seat and notice a change in the seat's position--perhaps the seat is reclined or has been moved back for a taller person--his other girlfriend may have moved it. If his car is normally filled with fast food wrappers and papers from work, but is now clean and fresh smelling, he may be trying to impress someone other than you. His car may contain strange receipts or the smell of a lady's perfume--or you may even find her stray hair clip or lip balm underneath the seat.
