Meningitis is a severe life threatening infection of the brain and the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Bacterial meningitis is a contagious disease that is more commonly seen in infants, those with a weakened immune system, and teenagers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every 10 people who get the disease dies from it, and many others are affected for life; which is why preventing the disease through use of a vaccine is important. There are some side effects associated with this vaccination that patients should be aware of.
Injection Site Complications
People who receive the meningitis vaccination may experience injection site complications. Redness, swelling, pain, discomfort or bruising can occur at the site of injection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least half of those who receive this vaccination will experience an injection site reaction. The use of an ice pack or cold compress may help to alleviate swelling and discomfort at the affected area. These side effects should be temporary and only last for a few days. A severe injection site reaction should be brought to the attention of a physician.
Headache and Fever
Headaches and a fever may occur following the meningitis vaccination. Patients can consult their physician regarding the use of an over-the-counter analgesic such as acetaminophen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort and the reduction of fever. A severe headache accompanied by seizure, confusion, vision changes, and muscle weakness should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome
According to the manufacturer of the Menactra meningitis vaccine, there is a potential for an increased chance of getting Guillain-Barré syndrome following vaccination. GBS is a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness throughout the body. Symptoms may begin as weakness and tingling in the legs that may begin to slowly spread to the upper body. GBS can affect the lungs and make breathing difficult. Patients who receive the meningitis vaccine that experience muscle tingling and weakness should seek emergency medical attention.
