Alpha hydroxy acid, also known as AHA, is a part of a group of natural acids that come from food sources such as fruit, sugar cane, milk, apples and wine, according to Wrinkle Review. Alpha hydroxy acid is present in many anti-aging skin care products and works as an exfoliant. Different compounds can function as an alpha hydroxy acid, including citric acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid and tartaric acid, and can serve the same purpose. Alpha hydroxy acids have been used for centuries to reduce wrinkles and exfoliate the skin. Over-the-counter AHA products must have a concentration of no more than 10 percent, whereas dermatologists can purchase products with a concentration of 20 to 30 percent. Only physicians have access to AHA with a concentration of 50 to 70 percent, as the higher the concentration, the higher the risk for severe skin irritation and burns.

Reduces Appearance of Scars

Alpha hydroxy acid is a powerful exfoliant for the skin, according to Wrinkle Review. Since AHA is an acid, it is effective in removing the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin to reveal the living cells beneath it. The higher concentrations of alpha hydroxy acid that are available to doctors are able to remove even thicker layers of the skin, including surface scars.

Anti-Aging Agent

The main purpose of alpha hydroxy acid is to exfoliate the skin, according to The Performance Leader. AHA applied directly to your skin in a cream or lotion will help to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving smoother, younger looking skin underneath. This will reduce the appearance of fine lines and minor wrinkles. AHA also works effectively as an anti-aging agent by stimulating the production of collagen, which is a substance that diminishes with age, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Treats Acne

Acne treatments that contain alpha hydroxy acids have become increasingly popular, according to healthyu-skin.org. AHAs are beneficial for treating acne due to their exfoliating effects of removing the top layer of skin and helping to clear pores. AHAs are effective in reducing the appearance of acne after the first two weeks of use and even more improvement after prolonged use.
