Detoxification diets and internal cleanse regimens are key alternative therapies for patients seeking to flush their body of unwanted toxins. While there is little scientific evidence of the effectiveness of detoxification diets according to MayoClinic.com, cleanse practitioners tout health benefits ranging from increased digestion and elimination functions to improved clarity, energy and overall health. While there are numerous cleanses available for you to choose from, the best way to actively clear your body of toxins is to utilize a comprehensive approach that takes into account your overall habits and health.

Step 1

Create a list of the foods and beverages you regularly consume that may include toxic elements. Mark or indicate items that promote body toxicity, such as caffeine, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, high fructose corn syrup and saturated fats, as well as all non-organic foods. Curb these foods by replacing them with healthier, high-fiber alternatives and by purchasing organic food items, particularly dairy products and produce, from your local health food store or farmer's market.

Step 2

Reduce your susceptibility to external and environmental toxins by discontinuing any chemical-based household cleaners that you may currently use. Search your bathroom for personal health care products, such as shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes, that may include harmful mineral components or heavy metals. Replace these items with natural alternatives, such as organic cleaners and essential oils.

Step 3

Promote your mental health to fortify your resistance to harmful emotions, such as stress, anger and anxiety. Attend a local yoga class or meditation group in your area at least once a week and apply the techniques during stressful situations.

Step 4

Drink a decoction of dandelion tea every day to help fortify your liver and purify your blood. Combine 2 tsp. of dried organic dandelion leaf with 2 tsp. of dried organic dandelion root in a mesh tea ball and add 3 cups of boiling water. Let the tea steep for 10 to 15 minutes before drinking.

Step 5

Take a sauna session at least two times a week wherein you spend time soaking in a sauna room at your local gym or health center. For best results, complete a 15- to 30-minute cardiovascular exercise before your sauna session.

Step 6

Select an internal cleanse program based on your specific bodily needs and toxicity. Decide whether you would prefer to do a 10-day master cleanse wherein you consume fresh lemon juice, grade B maple syrup and cayenne on a regularly basis -- or would prefer to begin with a specific organ body cleanse, such as a liver juice fast. Research the types of cleanses available and select a regimen that you prefer.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always remember to drink plenty of water throughout your cleanse to make sure that you are keeping your body well hydrated. Drinking 64 to 128 oz. of purified water a day will allow you to flush your body of toxins as they become released during your cleanse, while also flushing any lactic acid deposited by your muscles.
  • Consult your doctor or personal physician before embarking on an internal cleanse regimen that involves fasting or a radical new exercise routine. If you experience fatigue, dizziness, nausea or any other negative symptoms, discontinue your cleanse immediately.
