Many physical and psychological conditions can cause tiredness and fatigue. Lack of sleep or more serious reasons for tiredness and fatigue are concerns to look into. Lack of energy, motivation and the constant need for sleep are some symptoms of tiredness and fatigue. Seeing a doctor to discover why you are experiencing tiredness and fatigue will give you specific answers, but there are common causes.

Hypothyroidism

Tiredness and fatigue can result from hypothyroidism. The thyroid makes hormones that control how the body uses energy. Hypothyroidism occurs when the body has a deficiency in thyroid hormones. Causes of hypothyroidism are medications such as lithium, congenital conditions, radiation treatments, autoimmune thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, postpartum thyroiditis, and spontaneous onset, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Not possessing enough thyroid hormones slows down metabolism and many functions of the body. Symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, tiredness, depression, weight gain, and slowed heart rate, among others.

Nutrition

Poor nutrition is a common cause of tiredness and fatigue. Deficiencies of vitamins, calories, proteins, fluids and fiber, among other nutritional supports, can cause fatigue. When the body does not receive enough nutrition, it tends to get tired easily and lethargic. Poor nutrition leads to altered hormone levels and result in imbalance in the bodies' endocrine function, causing tiredness and fatigue, states Natural Ways. Proper nutrition is a healthy way to gain the energy needed to perform at your best.

Anemia

Anemia is a condition where the red blood cells do not contain enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a respiratory protein found in the red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. The condition also occurs when the blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. Without an adequate number of red blood cells or hemoglobin, the body's need for energy is not effectively met. The National Heart Blood and Lung Institute states that the most common symptom of anemia is fatigue and tiredness due to lack of hemoglobin. Fewer oxygen supplies in the body cause less energy for the body to perform.

Medication

Side effects of many forms of medication include fatigue and tiredness. Antihistamines, antidepressants, beta-blockers, steroids, sleeping pills, diuretics and many over-the-counter medications all have possible side effects of tiredness and fatigue. Side effects of medications can result in both physical and psychological symptoms of tiredness and fatigue, including lack of energy, difficulty in concentration, drowsiness and physical exertion. If you feel your medications are causing you fatigue and tiredness, you can consult with a doctor or pharmacy to find out the side effects of your medications.
