According to Mayoclinic.com, night sweats are characterized by episodes of excessive nighttime sweating that soaks nightclothes and bedding although one's bedroom is not excessively hot. While night sweats alone are not usually indicative of a medical problem, at times, hormonal imbalances due to hypothyroidism or menopause can trigger night sweats. Neurological conditions such as strokes or viral infections can also induce night sweats.
Sage
Sage has historically been used for the treatment of night sweats. It has a significant amount of estrogen, which helps to reduce the secretions of the sweat glands, thus preventing night sweats. In the Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, Michael Murray N.D notes that sage has anhidrotic properties, meaning that is prevents perspiration.
Motherwort
According to Projectaware.org, Motherwort is effective at lessening the severity, frequency and duration of night sweats and hot flashes. It has a calming effect on the central nervous system and circulatory system, which helps in preventing night sweats. It is recommended that 10 to 15 drops of motherwort be added to a drink of water and consumed up to six times daily.
Flax seed oil
Hormonal imbalances due to hypothyroidism or menopause can trigger night sweats or hot flashes. Flax seed oil is a phytoestrogen, an estrogen-like substance that can be used to stabilize hormone levels. Night sweats attributed to menopause is due to elevated levels of estrogen in the body. Flaxseed oil can help in stabilizing this hormonal imbalance because it contains lignans and phytoestrogens that inhibit the synthesis of estrogen.
