Scars are marks that form on the skin when a cut, burn or other wound heals. Scar tissue is denser yet more delicate than the surrounding skin and usually has a different texture. A number of remedies can be used to fade scars by promoting the growth of healthier skin.
Proper Care
Proper care of a wound is the best way to minimize scarring. In his book "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II," Sid Kirchheimer recommends cleaning the wound every day with an anti-bacterial soap or hydrogen peroxide to prevent infection. Citing Dr. Jeffrey H Binstock, an assistant professor of dermatologic surgery at the University Of California School of Medicine, he notes that a secondary infection can hinder healing and increase the severity of scarring.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera helps to remove scars by hindering scar-tissue formation, according to Elizabeth Burdick, a skin therapist and microbiologist. This herb speeds healing and promotes the growth of healthy skin tissue. The book "The Amazing Ancient to Modern Useful Plant Aloe Vera," by R. Prevost also recommends aloe vera. If you have an aloe vera plant, slice a leaf open and apply the clear gel to the wound. Alternatively, apply a commercial cream or lotion that contains aloe vera.
Massage and Moisturize
An effective remedy for removing scars is massaging skin moisturizer into the affected area, says Dr. Stephen M Purcell, dermatology department chairman at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. The skin moisturizer softens and smooths the scarred skin, while the massaging increases blood flow to the area and more evenly distributes collagen.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C speeds healing, which lowers the risk of scar tissue formation. Foods that contain large amounts of vitamin C boost the growth of collagen tissue around blood vessels in the skin, which promotes faster healing, according to Dr. Michael Rask, a Las Vegas orthopedic surgeon. Foods such as citrus fruit, broccoli and potatoes are rich in this vitamin.
