Sauna belts, which are electronic heating belts worn around the waist, intend to offer health benefits similar to using an actual sauna. While the effectiveness of the belts has not been scientifically established, proponents and marketers of sauna belts cite health benefits ranging from reduced weight and increased fat oxidation to flushing harmful toxins from the body. Relatively inexpensive and easy-to-use sauna belts come in three varieties: battery-operated, electric and infrared. With patience, practice and an eye for detail, practically anyone can learn how to use the sauna belt.
Step 1
Sit down in a comfortable location near an electrical outlet if your unit comes with an electric plug. Open the belt by pulling on the Velcro straps and sliding them through the belt's plastic buckle. Place your belt over your desired body part (such as the hips, arms or abdomen) and apply the straps through the belt buckle and Velcro sections. Make sure the sauna belt hasn't been creased or folded. Also, to prevent cutting off circulation, it shouldn't be too tight.
Step 2
Locate the temperature regulator on the remote control and battery unit and make sure the sauna belt temperature is switched to "off." Plug in or place the batteries inside the unit to activate the belt.
Step 3
Turn the dial on the remote control or battery unit so that it is turned to the highest heat. This will allow the belt to heat up to the 95 to 160 Fahrenheit temperature range. Wait five minutes before lowering the temperature to your desired heat setting. Reduce the heat setting if the sauna belt is uncomfortable or too hot for your skin.
Step 4
Allow the belt to work on the body area for 20 to 40 minutes before turning off the temperature and removing the belt. Unplug the belt and lay it on a flat, hard surface out of the reach of pets or children in order to allow the belt to cool down. Use a towel to remove any sweat on your body and wait at least 20 minutes before showering, eating or drinking cold drinks.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink plenty of water before and after your sauna belt session to reduce your chances of dehydration during the treatment. While some sauna belts have sufficient padding to be used on bare skin, wear a thin garment such as a t-shirt or sweat pants if you are unsure.
- Contact your personal physician if you experience any skin irritation, inflammation or other negative effects while using the sauna belt. Immediately discontinue your sauna belt session if you experience symptoms of dizziness, nausea or increased heart rate.
