Alpha hydroxy acids, also referred to as AHAs, are widely used in the cosmetics industry. They exfoliate the skin for a brighter complexion and reduce the signs of aging. The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that AHAs reverse sun damage while softening skin. Many lotions containing AHAs also include sunblock, as AHAs cause extreme sun sensitivity.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion SPF 15

This is an oil-free, allergy-tested and non-comedogenic product, which means that it does not clog pores. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Lotion contains vitamins C, E, B5 and alpha hydroxy acid. The manufacturer does not list the percentage of AHA in this product. The sunblock ingredients are 7.5 percent octinoxate and 5 percent oxybenzone.

Clarins Multi-Active Skin Renewal Serum

Clarins has been around since 1954. Their Multi-Active Skin Renewal Serum exfoliates the skin using AHAs combined with antioxidant botanicals. It can be used for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and should be used once a day under regular moisturizers.

The active ingredients are organic lemon acids, nopal flower extract, papaya, phytosphingosine and cangzhu.

Skin Ceuticals Renew Overnight Dry

Skin Ceuticals products are available at dermatologists' and plastic surgeons' offices, as well as at medi-spas and other skin care centers. Massage a small amount of Renew Overnight Dry cream into the face and neck in the evening after cleansing and toning. This product claims to exfoliate dead skin cells, fight dryness, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and brighten skin.

Renew Overnight Dry cream contains 10 percent alpha hydroxy acid, the maximum recommended consumer level of AHAs. Other ingredients include aloe, chamomile, evening primrose oil and comfrey. It is important to use a UVA/UVB sunblock while using this product.
