Ideally, one bowel movement daily is a good sign that your colon is working well. If this is not the case, you could change your diet, sip herbal detox teas and include regular exercise to get yourself back on track. Avoid extreme measures such as pharmaceutical laxatives or restricted diets as these are not long-term solutions.
Drink Hot Lemon Tea Daily
Drink a cup of hot water with half a small lemon squeezed into it each morning to help establish a daily bowel movement. This is safe to do and few people will have a negative reaction to it, because it is gentle enough to do daily. If this doesn't work, eat a tablespoon of dried prunes or figs each night before bedtime. The next morning, sip more hot lemon tea.
Directed Colon Cleanse: Psyllium
Use a directed colon cleanse three times a year as a way to keep your gastrointestinal system healthy. Some people do this around the spring, summer and fall equinox. For five to seven mornings in a row, make a drink from one tablespoon of psyllium seed husk, four ounces water and one ounce of fresh organic apple juice. Drink immediately as the psyllium seed will congeal. Psyllium seed husk absorbs water several times its weight and will cleanse the colon.
If psyllium seed husks don't agree with you, use a tablespoon of ground flax seeds instead. Eat a light diet during your five- to seven-day colon cleanse.
Consume a Detox Diet
Carrie L'Esperance, author of The New Seasonal Detox Diet, advises people to eat a high-fiber, whole foods diet to detox the colon. Eat a varied diet of vegetables; fruits; whole grains such as millet, quinoa, oats, brown rice and groats; lean proteins; and non-saturated oils such as olive, canola and flax seed.
The soluble and insoluble fiber will sweep waste from the GI tract. This diet can be eaten indefinitely as it provides excellent nutrition.
