Fast-pitch softball is a very competitive game, dependent on dominant pitching and clutch hits. Games are often close, with scores like 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 quite common. To help those pitching performances stand up, teams must play dependable defense. Players must make all the routine plays, and at least some of the tough ones. Fielding drills can help keep them on top of their defensive game.
Double Play Drill
Turning the double play must be a staple of any fast-pitch softball team. In order to turn double plays consistently, infielders must field ground balls cleanly, and deliver the ball to second base in a position where the second baseman or shortstop can catch the ball and throw it quickly on to first. In this drill, the coach will hit three hard ground balls to each of the infielders. On the first two, each infielder will deliver the ball to second base as if starting a double play. On the third ground ball, the infielder will throw the ball home as if it were a force play, and the catcher will then throw it to first base to complete the double play.
Bunt Drill
The bunt is an important part of fast-pitch softball. In the late innings of a close game, coaches often ask hitters to bunt to move a runner a base closer to home. In order to combat sacrifice bunts, have your infielders charge in toward home plate and field bunts on the run. In this drill, the infielder should field three bunts. On the first, she throws to second; on the second, she throws to first; on the third, she throws home. Include the first baseman and the pitcher in this drill.
Cutoff Play
Getting the ball back to the infield after a long hit is vital in fast-pitch softball. To get players familiar with what to do on long hits, drive the ball to the outfield gaps, so each outfielder gets a chance to throw the ball in. On the first ball to right-center field, the right fielder must throw the ball to the second baseman, who has gone out to take the throw. As soon as she catches it, the second baseman must wheel and throw the ball home. Do the same thing with the center fielder and the left fielder. On these plays, the shortstop will take the cutoff throw and fire it home.
