Ma huang is a Chinese herb more commonly known as ephedra. Use of products containing ma huang or other ephedrine alkaloids can stimulate the nervous system, which makes it an effective weight-loss aid when combined with caffeine, according to the National Institutes of Health. However, use of ma huang can be dangerous or even deadly. Supplements and other products containing ephedra, including ma huang products, were banned by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 because of the risk of adverse side effects, including sudden death. Cardiac Risks
People using supplements and other products containing ma huang may develop irregular heart rhythms or experience chest tightness and an increase in blood pressure. Heart attacks, cardiac arrest and damage to the heart muscle may also occur, according to the National Institutes of Health. Because of these risks, people with any form of heart disease or high blood pressure should use extreme caution when using products containing ma huang.
Organ Damage
Liver damage can occur in people using ma huang. In addition, some people have developed kidney stones. Because of these risks, people with pre-exisiting kidney and liver conditions should not use supplements containing ephedra, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Breathing Difficulties
Difficulty breathing can also develop in people using ma huang, according to Drugs.com. Some people also begin retaining fluid in the lungs, which can also lead to respiratory problems.
Stroke
Strokes have also been reported in people taking supplements containing ma huang. People who have previously suffered a stroke or transient ischemic attacks, also called mini-strokes, should not use the supplement because of these risks, the National Institutes of Health advises.
Mood Changes
Use of supplements containing ma huang may cause severe mood changes, including feelings of euphoria and mania. Some people become agitated or irritable, and depression symptoms may worsen. Suicidal thoughts or tendencies may also develop, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Urinary Changes
Changes to normal urinary patterns may develop in people using supplements containing ma huang. You may notice a sudden increase in urine production or may experience pain while urinating. Some people also have trouble passing urine. Because of these risks, ma huang should not be used in people with kidney and prostate conditions, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Headaches
Headaches may occur in people using ma huang. Some people also experience dizzy spells, and some have suffered seizures linked to the supplement, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Gastrointestinal Distress
Mild gastrointestinal distress can develop in people taking ma huang. Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, stomach pain and diarrhea have been reported, according to Drugs.com.
Muscle Pain
Some ma huang users have developed muscle pain or weakness as a side effect. Muscle tremors or symptoms similar to those of Parkinson's disease are also possible, according to the National Institutes of Health.
