As people age, it's common to begin to notice excess fat and droopiness around the jaw line, also known as jowls. There are several different facial exercises that can be used to target the jowls for a more toned, leaner looking face. Facial exercises targeting the jowls can help to reduce the amount of excess fat around the jaw and neckline within several weeks of consistent daily treatments.

Jowl Lifter

Carolyn of CarolynsFacialFitness.com recommends this facial exercise for targeting the jowls. Begin the exercise by placing your fingers on either side of your face next to your chin just below the jawline. Tilt your head back slightly, and curl your bottom lip over top of your upper lip. Turn your head slightly, and tighten the cheek muscle on the side of your face your fingers are touching. Squeeze your eyes shut while gently sliding your fingers up over the jawline in sort of a massaging motion. Repeat this exercise five times on each side of the face. This exercise will directly target the jowls.

Grand Gesture

This exercise focuses on the areas around the mouth where the jowls are most prominent. Start by pressing your lips together as tightly as you can while maintaining your lips normal width. Next, place your hands at each corner of your mouth, and proceed to gently pull your lips in a half-circle motion. Facial exercise expert, Carolyn Cleaves, recommends continuing this motion for a period of 40 seconds before resting your face.

Lower Lip Lift

The lower lip lift facial exercise is effective at toning the jowls and upper neck area for those looking to reduce the appearance of a double chin. Begin this exercise making a pouting facial expression by lifting your lower lip over top of your upper lip. Next, tilt your head until you are looking up toward the ceiling; you should feel your neck muscles stretching at this point. Keep your lower lip and head up for a five count before returning to the starting position. Do several repetitions of this exercise up to three times per day.

"O" Exercise

As the name implies, this facial exercise involves making an "O" shape with your mouth. This will exercise the muscles surrounding the mouth, which can help to reduce the appearance of jowls over time. Begin by opening your mouth wide and hiding your teeth behind your lips. Next, slowly transition into pursing your lips into an "O" shape while making sure to squeeze your mouth muscles tightly the entire time; hold for a few moments before resting. Repeat this movement 10 times per set. After several weeks of doing this facial exercise, the appearance of jowls should begin to fade, and the area surrounding your mouth should show signs of becoming leaner and more toned.
