Benicar HCT is a combination medication: an angiotensin II receptor blocker and a diuretic. Together, these medications help to lower blood pressure and reduce fluid retention and swelling. This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it may cause fetal injury or death. This medication should be taken at the same time each day for optimal effectiveness. There are some side effects associated with Benicar HCT that users should be aware of.

Headache and Dizziness

Benicar HCT may cause headache and dizziness. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to Benicar HCT. Patients should use caution while driving or completing tasks that may be dangerous until they know how this medication will affect them. Patients can consult their physician regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the occasional relief of headache pain and discomfort. Headache and dizziness may also occur with hypotension, or low blood pressure. Users should monitor their blood pressure frequently at home while taking Benicar HCT and know when to consult a physician.

Nausea

A common side effect of Benicar HCT is nausea, reports Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food may help decrease nausea. Eating a bland diet and avoiding spicy or fatty foods can help reduce gastrointestinal symptoms while taking Benicar HCT. Severe nausea that leads to vomiting should be brought to the attention of a physician.

Sensitivity to the Sun

Benicar HCT can cause an increased sensitivity to the sun. Users should avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until they know how they will react to Benicar HCT, says Drugs.com. Patients should use sunblock and protective clothing if they will be exposed to the sun.

High Blood Sugar

Patients taking Benicar HCT may experience high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia. Symptoms of hyperglycemia include increased thirst, urination, hunger, a fruity breath, and confusion. Those who experience these symptoms while taking Benicar HCT should be evaluated by their practitioner.
