How to Make a Rope Rappelling Harness

Making a rope rappelling harness is a relatively simple and straight forward process if you know the proper technique. Some rope rappelling harnesses come ready-made. However, this is an unnecessary expense. A very safe and effective sit string harness can be made with a simple strip of climbing webbing. The sit string rope rappelling harness has loops for each leg and wraps around the hips and waist. It is then connected to the climbing rope with a carabiner.
Step 1
Get a long sturdy piece of webbing. They are made of nylon or other strong composite thread and can be purchased at any climbing store. You will use this webbing to tie your rope rappelling harness.
Step 2
Tie two leg loops using overhand knots. These are called bowlines. They should be slightly larger than the circumference of your thighs. Leave a link of six inches of webbing between the loops.
Step 3
Step one leg into each leg loop and bring it up to your waist. Tighten the loops around your legs until they are snug. Pull the rest of the webbing to the back of your legs then wrap them around the outside of your legs and under each of the leg loops.
Step 4
Cross the excess webbing in an "X" in front of your body then around your back. The two ends should now be near your belly button.
Step 5
Tie the two ends of webbing together with a water knot or a square knot backed up by an overhand knot.
Step 6
Clip the water knot together with the "X" of webbing across your abdomen with a locking carabiner. Make sure the carabiner is clipped on with the opening portion facing toward you facing up. The rope rappelling harness is now ready for climbing.
Warning
Great care and attention must be paid when making a rope rappelling harness. It is a vitally important piece of equipment. Improper construction and use of a rope rappelling harness can lead to injury or even death. It is always best to consult with experienced professionals to make sure that your rope rappelling harness is safe and secure before you use it.
