A clean colon is important for optimum health and wellness. When the colon is impacted it can lead to a range of health disorders and illnesses, leaving you feeling bloated, heavy and sluggish. Halitosis, stomach cramps, migraines, muscle and joint pain can result from an impacted colon. Fortunately a variety of home remedies can be used to clean your colon to eliminate gas, constipation, discomfort and other undesirable symptoms.
Diet
A 1995 article published by Family Doctor highlights the importance of fiber in the diet. It reported that fiber helps treat constipation, diverticulitis and hemorrhoids while lowering cholesterol and lessening the risk of coronary heart disease, certain types of cancer and type two diabetes. A fiber-rich diet aids in cleansing the colon and helps maintain colon health. Eating fresh fruits such as apples with the skin, dates, prunes and avocados will help keep you regular. Oatmeal, flaxseed, barley and rye should be included in your diet, and whole wheat is also useful provided you don't suffer from wheat allergies. Make a vegetable soup with kale, onions, garlic, carrots and cabbage and minimize the amount of oil and seasoning. These vegetables help cleanse, tone and strengthen your colon. Consume this for a period of days, eliminating greasy and sugary foods. Be sure to stay hydrated and drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day. Drink fresh fruit juices, mixing them with water to cut down on the sugar content, and stick to organic produce when possible.
Home Enema Kits
Home enema kits can help clean your colon. They are easy to use and relatively inexpensive to buy. An enema kit generally consists of a bag, hose, pump, clamp, and nozzle. They are made of latex, rubber, silicone, stainless steal or plastic. Filtered water is pumped into the colon through the rectum. Once the colon is full, peristalsis is activated and the water is expelled to release fecal matter, cleansing the entire colon. An article on Enema Bag illustrates the effectiveness of coffee as an enema. According to the article, coffee when used in enemas work to detoxify the system and cleanse the colon. The alkaloid theophylline contained in coffee opens blood vessels to filter waste and toxins from blood circulating in the colon wall. You can add essential oils lavender, peppermint, fennel and frankincense to your enema solution to aid peristalsis and strengthen your immune system. Massage your stomach while doing the enema in a counter-clockwise direction, beginning at the bottom left corner, to follow the shape of the colon towards the cecum (the beginning of the large intestine). This helps to loosen hardened fecal matter. When you expel the water, change the direction of the massage to help push out the toxic waste.
Herbs
If your colon has been impacted for a while, you may have high levels of toxic waste in your pancreas, liver and kidneys. Cayenne pepper is a blood purifier, and helps with the excretion of waste through sweat. Goldenseal helps improve the function of your liver and pancreas, while parsley works as a diuretic to cleanse the kidneys. Peppermint is useful in easing stomach cramps associated with constipation and can improve digestion. Green tea is another herb with excellent detoxifying qualities and psyllium husk can assist elimination of waste through hydrating the colon, which in effect softens stools. Fresh herbs can be added to food, brewed in teas or taken as supplements. A 1999 article published on the Baseline of Health Foundation website highlights the importance of colon cleansing prior to flushing the liver. The liver deposits waste through the bile duct, traveling to the colon. Excess waste can plug up the colon, causing a back up into the bloodstream, in turn causing serious illness.
