Hair that feels dry, brittle and breaks off when you brush it may be damaged. Your hair may have become damaged if you have exposed it to heat, hair-styling products, hair color, hair perming chemicals, chlorine or the sun. If your hair has a different consistency than it used to, don't be alarmed. You can reverse some of your hair's damage by adding moisture to your hair follicles and strengthening your damaged hair.

Brush Correctly

Brushing your hair may make your hair feel silky and smooth, but you may be tearing your hair and causing further damage, says an article in "Good Housekeeping." Instead of ripping apart the snarls in your hair with a plastic-bristled brush, opt for a natural-bristled hairbrush, such as a wooden or boar-bristled brush that will carefully remove tangles. Stop brushing your hair right after you get out of the shower. Instead, wait for hair to dry before brushing it. If hair is particularly tangled, spray on a small amount of detangling spray before you brush it.

Dry Carefully

Break your addiction to the blow dryer by allowing your hair to air dry at least several times a week. If you must blow dry your hair, do it correctly. Valerie Monroe, beauty director of "O: The Oprah Magazine," recommends blotting your hair with a towel when you get out of the shower to absorb some of the water. This way, you won't need to keep the blow dryer on your hair as long. Dry your hair as far away from your head as possible to help to prevent heat damage, and move quickly so the blow dryer is not focused on one spot for a long time.

Condition With Mayonnaise

David Daines, owner of David Daines Salon in New York City recommends slathering mayonnaise on the hair to add natural moisture and make damaged hair stronger. Place a heaping handful of mayonnaise straight out of the jar onto dry hair and carefully work the goop into the ends of your hair. Comb through your hair with your fingers to evenly distribute the mayo all the way to your roots. Place a shower cap on your head to prevent dripping and leave the mayonnaise on for at least five minutes before rinsing it out.
