The tip in volleyball is an effective way to keep the defense guessing. Learning when to tip takes practice and experience. Focus drills on tipping the ball and make players decide when and where a tip is used. Use drills that include game-like situations in order to show players actual defense they might see.
6 on 6 Tip Drill
Play this drill like a normal game with six players on each side. Force teams to use all three hits every time--a pass, set and hit. According to strength-and-power-for-volleyball.com, every hit over the net has to be a tip. No spikes are allowed. Keep the ball in play for as long as you can, and make teams rotate while the other team is volleying.
2 versus 2 Tip Drill
Set up a small area of the court to play this drill inside of. Home.earthlink.net recommends a 10 by 20 foot or 15 by 20 foot court. Form teams of two, and stand on either side of the net in the grids. Play by normal volleyball rules but focus on using short, accurate tips that stay inside the small grid. The drill focuses on accuracy and using the tip to score points.
If-Then-Tip-Swing
Use two teams with four players on each side of the net. Put three players at the net like normal, and put the other player in the back row. The coach starts the drill by tossing the ball to the player in the back row. The ball is passed to the setter on the right side of the net. The setter sets the ball to the middle hitter, who has to watch the defense and make a decision to spike or tip the ball. According to volleyball.com, if the left front player on defense moves forward for the double block, the middle hitter should tip the ball to right corner, where the left defender just vacated. It the left defender drops back to play defense, the middle hitter should spike it.
