If your skin is feeling irritated, itchy and uncomfortable, it may not be easy to determine the cause on your own. Itching skin may be caused by eczema, dry skin, celiac disease, allergic reactions, chickenpox, or more serious disorders such as kidney failure and anemia, says the Mayo Clinic. To determine the cause of your itchy skin, consult a doctor. If your doctor approves, you can use herbal remedies to treat your itching skin symptoms.

Tea Tree Oil Salve

For itching skin, Kathi Keville, author of "Herbs for Health and Healing," recommends making a skin salve from essential oils and herbs, including tea tree oil. The salve is particularly helpful in soothing itching caused by eczema and psoriasis, says Keville. Mix tincture solutions of a half tsp. pau d'arco bark and a half tsp. goldenseal root, then add eight drops of tea tree oil essential oil. To this mixture, add eight drops of chamomile essential oil. Combine the ingredients with a store-bought comfrey salve, available at health food stores. When the ingredients are completely mixed, apply the salve to the skin. Repeat as needed throughout the day to soothe itching skin.

Calendula Ointment

The calendula, also known as the marigold, is a flowering plant that may be effective in treating skin conditions and infections, says the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Dr. Nicole Sundene, a neuropathic physician and the editor-in-chief of KitchenTableMedicine.com, suggests calendula ointment as a temporary solution to itchy skin. Calendula ointment can be purchased at health food stores and may help to calm and soothe skin that is itchy and irritated. Although calendula oil may temporarily calm the skin, it is important to determine the underlying cause of the itchy skin in the long run, says Dr. Sundene.

Aloe Vera

If you are experiencing itchy skin due to a rash such as poison ivy or poison oak, slather your skin with aloe vera, recommends home remedy website, Health911.com. Aloe helps to decrease the healing time of both sores and rashes associated with poison ivy, and may also be effective in healing itchy skin due to sunburn. Purchase aloe gel from the drugstore or grocery store and apply a generous amount to the itchy areas of the skin as often as necessary throughout the day. You can also go to a nursery and purchase an aloe plant, then break a leaf off of the plant. Carefully split the leaf open and remove the gel from the inside. Rub the aloe gel on your itching skin.
