Millions of Americans, both male and female, suffer from hair loss. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that baldness can be the result of heredity, chemical hair treatments, medication or alopecia. Once an irreversible condition, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of minoxidil as the first treatment for hair loss in 1988. Since then, other prescription medications have followed, as have over-the-counter topical treatments.

Rogaine for Men Hair Regrowth Treatment

Rogaine is not a shampoo, but a topical foam and the top-selling and top-rated product at both Amazon.com and Drugstore.com. Produced by McNeil-PPC, Inc., Rogaine's active ingredient is five percent concentration of minoxidil. According to clinical testing conducted by McNeil-PPC, Rogaine was successful in 85 percent of men when used twice daily over a four-month period. It is the only topical product approved by the FDA to treat hair loss.

Nioxin System 2

Nioxin is a hair care brand sold in salons and on the Internet. When Proctor & Gamble purchased the Nioxin brand in 2008, its president, Robert Jongstra called Nioxin "the leading brand in the speciality thinning hair segment." Nioxin's System 2 is a daily three-part treatment. The cleanser is used first and cleans and infuses vitamins and proteins in the scalp. It is followed by the Scalp Therapy, a conditioner formulated with essential oils, antioxidants and enzymes, which moisturize the scalp and strengthen follicles. The final stage is the Scalp Treatment, a leave-in foam that blocks harmful ultraviolet rays and adds nutrients.

Revita

DS Laboratories describes its Revita product as a "high performance hair growth stimulating shampoo." The product's blend of natural compounds includes the active ingredient procyanidin B-2 and C-1, natural flavinoids extracted from apples. Clinical studies by DS Laboratories have shown that procynadins work "almost as effectively as minoxidil" at restoring thinning hair. Revita also contains ketoconazole, an antifungal cleanser, and biotin, a vitamin B compound to boost follicle and skin health.

Tricomin

The Tricomin line of hair products utilizes copper peptides to restore hair thickness and prevent further loss. Copper peptides have been shown to strengthen the scalp's connective tissues and keep follicles from shrinking. ProCyte Corporation produces two Tricomin shampoos: a revitalizing shampoo and a conditioning shampoo. The revitalizing blend infuses the scalp with amino acids and minerals to promote scalp healing, while the conditioning shampoo is a 2-in-1 that cleanses, thickens and softens the hair while treating the hair loss.
