Summersville, West Virginia, is home to the state's largest lake with more than 2,700 acres of water and 60 miles of shoreline. Its unique geography has given it a reputation as one of the best areas for adventure sports. The lake offers excellent swimming, boating and fishing. Rock climbers and scuba divers also enjoy the sandstone cliffs that brush the shoreline. Just a short drive away, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and zip-line activities await the adventurous.
Battle Run Campground
Battle Run Campground is the ideal place to stay for those who wish to explore Summersville Lake. The campground sits on the shore of the lake, providing easy access to the lake. All but seven of the 117 campsites are equipped with electric hookups. Other amenities include restrooms, dump station, toilets, laundry, potable water, showers and telephone. Guests can enjoy accessible swimming and fishing, or explore the lake from one of the many bike or hiking trails. Reservations for Battle Run must be made at least two days in advance from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend; sites may be available on a first-come, first-served basis outside of the reservation season.
Mountain Lake Campground
Mountain Lake Campground offers luxury camping along Summersville Lake. Guests may choose to camp in one of their large tent sites, or stay indoors in a lakefront cabin. The campground is located behind the full-service marina, providing easy access for those with boats or who wish to rent a boat. Fishing and swimming at the lake are also easily accessible, although some guests may prefer to swim in the campground's spacious swimming pool. Other features of Mountain Lake include an 18-hole mini-golf course, amphitheater with movies on weekends, playgrounds, restaurant and camp store. In addition to lake activities, campers may enjoy the hiking and biking trails, horseshoes, volleyball, basketball or badminton. Reservations at least two days in advance are strongly encouraged, especially for cabins.
Cooter's Cabins & Campin'
Cooter's Cabins & Campin' is located in West Virginia's whitewater country, 25 miles south of Summersville in the town of Fayetteville. The drive is close enough to experience the thrills of Summersville Lake, but puts you even closer to adventure sports activities like whitewater rafting, rock climbing and zip lining through the trees. Fayetteville is also the home of the New River Gorge Bridge, the site of the annual Bridge Day celebration in which experienced jumpers parachute, para-sail and bungee off the bridge. At Cooter's Cabins & Campin', guests can experience rustic camping in a quiet, secluded area of Fayetteville. You can camp in one of their primitive campsites, a campsite with electric hook-up, or a site with full RV hook-up. Cooter's also has five rustic cabins from which guests may choose. Reservations are recommended, especially during whitewater season, which runs from April through October.
Rifrafters Campground
Rifrafters Campground is located just two miles from the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, just a 25-minute drive from the town of Summersville. "Rifrafters Campground provides tent and RV camping and economy cabins in the woodlands," according to their website. There are 30 tent sites in the main campground, but guests are welcome to find their own primitive site anywhere on the property. RV camping is easy with 11 full hook-up RV sites; undeveloped RV sites are available for overflow. Rifrafters also provides eight cabins with electricity; there are no kitchens or bathrooms. Campers can delight in clean showers and restrooms and the convenience of a full-time staff to assist them. Reservations with one night's deposit are recommended in summer and fall, during whitewater season.
Ray's Campground
Ray's Campground is located 18 minutes south of Summersville in the town of Hico. In addition to the close proximity of Summersville Lake activities, campers are just a short drive from whitewater rafting on the Gauley River and hiking at Hawk's Nest State Park. Ray's provides private tent camping, RV campsites and economy cabins. Services and amenities include breakfast by reservation, electric hook-up, hot showers, camp store and an on-site camp supervisor 24 hours a day. In addition to local attractions, guests are welcome to explore the property by hiking through the woods of West Virginia. Reservations are recommended through the summer and fall months; all open sites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
