If you reside or are traveling anywhere near the San Diego area, there are plenty of healthy, recreational things for you and your family to do. Health-conscious individuals get a pleasant surprise from the different options. Not only can you have a good time in San Diego, but you can get a nice workout doing it.

History

History has shown both vacationers and locals have an appreciation for San Diego. Nearly a century ago, the glamorous Hollywood scene of the 1930s had an affect on San Diego's popular thoroughbred racing events. Throughout the years, attractions such as SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo have been a main focus for tourists. Nowadays, events that involve participation are growing increasingly popular, such as the Midnight Madness Bicycle Ride that actually began in 1973.

Facts

You can't go anywhere near San Diego without taking time to explore Balboa Park, with its cluster of museums. In addition to the exercise and healthy recreation that comes from strolling through scenic museums, there are activities provided by organizations and independent groups that often use San Diego Parks and Recreation facilities. All ages enjoy Bobby Sox softball, Little League baseball and Pop Warner football. Other available programs are those devoted to recreation for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.

Considerations

San Diego offers many entertaining sights, sounds and places. However, some residents and vacationers fail to consider the other fun and athletic things to do there. The San Diego Chamber of Commerce is known for highlighting the city's museums, performance arts, shopping and pleasure cruises. But the chamber also provides extensive details on wholesome activities that benefit the mind, body and spirit.

Features

Included in the healthy things to do when you're near San Diego are the dance programs, sports activities and therapeutic services. Programs such as the San Diego Civic Dance Company and the Balboa Park Dance Company offer regular, affordable classes. The city features fitness events that people from near and far look forward to each year. More than 1,600 families and individuals have been known to participate in the Midnight Madness Bicycle Ride that commemorates Paul Revere's midnight ride. Preregistration fees are $15 for ages 12 and under and $30 for adults (as of 2010).

Major Events

Another physically active event is the annual San Diego Marathon. This walk/run, marathon typically takes place on an early morning in mid-January. Participants walk or run along the scenic coastline. Events involving physical exercise aren't the only healthy activities in San Diego. The Borrego Springs Grapefruit Festival held in April marks the end of the grapefruit season and is one of the more tastier events. Delicious and nutritious grapefruits are enjoyed in a variety of ways. It is celebrated with food, music, games arts and crafts and even a car show. Admission is free.
