Vermont is the perfect destination for diverse, year-round activities in the great outdoors. The long, snowy winters provide near endless skiing opportunities, lots of D.I.Y. sledding for the kids, and ample opportunity to build a snowman or start a snowball fight. Vermont's temperate, green summers are perfect for hiking, boating and sports from baseball to golf. In a state where billboards are illegal, nature is genuinely unspoiled.

Rent a House

Rescue Lake and the surrounding area of Ludlow, Vermont, has plenty of homes that can be rented seasonally or throughout the year. For folks who love the frozen majesty of Vermont in the winter, the woods around Lake Ludlow are perfect for activities like snow shoeing, cross country skiing and even sledding. Those who prefer the sun of the summer months can take a dip in the lake, explore the woods in full bloom and rife with wildlife, or simply sit down by the water with a book and some bug spray.

Boating

Though there are no beaches on Rescue Lake, boats can be launched into the water from the public fishing access point. Boating on Lake Rescue can take the form of a laconic float through the waters or strenuous hours of exercise. Kayaks and canoes can be launched and taken for a bout of athletic rowing, though small motorboats are also friends to the lake. Fishing is a popular activity at Lake Ludlow, as is leisure boating with a picnic lunch.

Ski and Board

Downhill skiing and snowboarding fill the winter months--and early spring in a state with snow on the ground until early April most years--of the Lake Rescue area compliments of Okemo and Killington. Two of Vermont's most popular ski resorts, Okemo, in Ludlow, and Killington, in the nearby town of the same name, offer equipment rentals, lessons and a slew of trails from bunny slopes to near-slaloms. With more than 200 trails, slopes and glades between the pair, winter at Lake Rescue is never dull for the skier or snowboarder.

Golf

Golf fans will find plenty to do in Lake Rescue. There's always space to work on your putt, though the Okemo Valley Golf Club gives you 18 holes amidst the vertiginous Green Mountains. For seasoned veterans of the game, simply stop by the course with your clubs to start a game. For beginners, Okemo Valley offers lessons. The course's pro shop has everything a golfer will need for a day of driving or the start of a lifetime love of the sport. Willie Dunn's Grille, looking over the 18th hole, is the spot to stop for a bite before or after a round.

Hiking

Once the snow melts--provided that it eventually does--Okemo Mountain becomes the perfect destination for Vermont hiking. The Healdville Trail on Okemo Mountain is littered with fire towers and lookouts, which afford breathtaking views of the Ludlow area and the Green Mountains. The 5.9-mile trail, marked with blue paint, starts gently by crossing streams at the mountain's base before beginning a more rigorous ascent. For those looking for a direct and less-arduous path to the 3,340-foot summit, a 4.5-mile road leads straight up the mountain.
