Pilates, a workout designed by Joseph Pilates more than 80 years ago, strives to increase flexibility, strengthen the core and improve overall coordination through a series of flowing movements that stabilize and tone the body. Many fitness facilities offer mat and reformer Pilates classes, but there's no reason why you can't participate in exceptional classes from the comfort of your own home. Like most home fitness videos, you will want to try several to see which style you prefer.
Pilates Complete for Everyone
In an article published in "Yoga Journal," Richard Rosen expounds the benefits of the pilates DVD, "Pilates Complete for Everyone." A yogi at heart, Rosen compliments the form, fashion and delivery provided by instructor Karen Garcia throughout this DVD. Broken down into short segments that provide instruction on specific moves, you have the option to piece each segment together or choose one of the pre-grouped workouts. These workouts are offered in basics, beginning, intermediate, intermediate/advanced and challenging segments, allowing you to fit the workout to your ability level.
Pilates Core Challenge
Listed as one of "Fitness" magazine's Best Workout DVDs, the "Pilates Core Challenge" offers difficult moves, but easy cuing for beginners. The combination of tough exercises and easy-to-follow instructions make it a video that can grow with you as you progress from beginner to intermediate and even to an advanced Pilates level. The instructor, former professional ballet dancer Ana Caban, discovered Pilates when she was recovering from a back injury. She became certified as an instructor and has produced a number of Pilates DVDs and runs her own Pilates studio.
Fat Burning Fusion
If you have a hard time getting down onto the floor to perform Pilates or other mat exercises, "Fat Burning Fusion" incorporates standing dance and Pilates movements. While not a traditional Pilates video, the fusion of dance and Pilates makes this workout tough and effective at strengthening the lower body and the muscles of the core. The workout suggests you perform the moves in bare feet, with only a mat as required equipment, making it an easy option to try at home.
