Royal jelly is secreted from the pharyngeal glands of nurse bees between their sixth and twelfth days of life. Fed to female larvae, this thick, milky substance is the only difference between female worker bees and those bees destined to eventually become queens. A rich source of vitamins and minerals, royal jelly boasts a variety of health benefits. The jelly is so potent, it is only necessary to take half a teaspoon daily to benefit from its nutrition.

Rejuvenation

Royal jelly is a powerhouse of nutrition and is known to rejuvenate the body when consumed. According to David Wolfe in "Superfoods," royal jelly is packed with large amounts of B5 and other B vitamins, and provides support for optimal energy levels. Additionally, it contains amino acids, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, and manganese. Dr. Cass Ingram in "The Longevity Solution: Stabilized Royal Jelly" refers to the research of Dr. H.W. Schmidt, a German researcher for the German Medical Association. Schmidt spent more then ten years studying royal jelly therapy, assessing and concluding royal jelly as "the most prominent valuable, rejuvenatory substance for reviving the body."

Clear Thinking

Phyllis A. Balch in "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," cites royal jelly as the only natural source of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate nerve impulses between nerve fibers. This neurotransmitter's presence in royal jelly may enhance one's ability to think clearly. It is this property that prompt many with Alzheimer's disease to seek this nutritious substance. Additionally, according to Dr. Cass Ingram in "The Longevity Solution: Stabilized Royal Jelly, royal jelly is high in phospholipids, RNA and DNA which are all needed for proper brain function.

Hormonal Balance

Royal jelly is a natural source of hormones including DHEA, progesterone and estrogen. This can help to alleviate symptoms of menopause, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. It is also thought to help aid the libido as it is fed to the queen bee to stimulate her egg production.

Immune Support

One of the most unique properties of royal jelly is a substance called 10-HDA. This hydroxy acid is thought to aid the immune system. Dr. Cass Ingram in "The Longevity Solution: Stabilized Royal Jelly," cites research by both the German and the French that shows that the 10-HDA in royal jelly is ideal for stimulating white blood cells to attack viruses including those that cause the herpes virus and hepatitis.
