Benicar is a medication in a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow and it helps the kidneys to eliminate extra fluid, states Drugs.com. Benicar is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It may be used in conjunction with other medications and diet and lifestyle modification. Users should be aware of some of the side effects associated with Benicar.

Flu-Like Symptoms

Patients taking Benicar may experience flu-like symptoms. Side effects may include runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and cough. The use of humidified air, saline nasal wash, and throat lozenges may help alleviate symptoms. If these symptoms occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph glands, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, or a yellow or green tinged mucous, it may be a sign of an infection that requires medical attention.

Stomach Pain and Diarrhea

Benicar may cause stomach pain and diarrhea. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to daily therapy with Benicar. Taking Benicar with food may help to decrease stomach pain and discomfort. Those who experience diarrhea while taking Benicar should increased their daily fluid intake to maintain adequate hydration. Severe diarrhea should be brought to the attention of a physician. It can lead to the development of dehydration, which may be dangerous and lead to additional complications.

Headache and Dizziness

Benicar may cause headache and dizziness, reports PDRHealth.com. These side effects may be temporary until the body adjusts to Benicar. Patients should use caution while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until they know how this medication will affect them. In some cases, headache and dizziness may be a symptom of dangerously low blood pressure. Patients taking Benicar should be instructed how to monitor their blood pressure at home, and when to contact their physician.

Back Pain and Aching Muscles

Back pain and aching muscles are possible side effects of Benicar. These side effects may be mild in some patients, and intolerable in others. Users may consult their physician regarding the use of an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen for the relief of mild back pain and muscle aches. Severe back and muscle pain should be brought to the attention of a physician.
