A 2005 study published by the American Psychiatric Association in the Psychiatric Journal has shown that a large percentage of Native Americans visit traditional healers if they suffer from a psychiatric disorder. Although further research is required as to whether these methods can help to assuage depression and other mental disorders, herbs are an important component of Native American medicine. Some of these herbs may help to alleviate depressive symptoms. If you think you are depressed, you should speak to your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. Always consult your doctor before using any herbal remedy.
Gingko Biloba
Gingko biloba is one of the oldest living tree species. It is used frequently in traditional medicine for its numerous healing powers, including the ability to increase circulation and enhance memory; according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it may be an effective treatment for Alzheimer's patients. In the book "Secrets of Native American Herbal Remedies", author Anthony J. Cichoke points out the use of gingko in Native American medicine for treating and alleviating depressive symptoms. He states that gingko contains compounds called flavonglycosides and gingkolic acid, which help to fight depression. You can purchase in most drug stores in capsule, tablet or dried herb form.
St. John's wort
St. John's wort has gained popularity in the United States in the past few years for its depression-fighting abilities. According to Cichoke, St. John's wort has been used for hundreds of years by the Klamath, Nez Perce, Yakima and other Native Americans for its calming effect. Most recently, it has been used more commonly in modern Native American medicine to treat depression. You can purchase St. John's wort as an over-the-counter supplement in tablet or capsule form. You can also make a tea using two teaspoons of the dried flowers in a cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10-15 minutes, strain and enjoy twice a day.
Passionflower
According to Gabrielle Hatfield in her book "Encyclopedia of Folk Medicine: Old World and New World Traditions," passionflower has been used, primarily in combination with other herbs, for the treatment of depression in modern Native American medicine. It contains calming properties that may help to alleviate a number of disorders, including anxiety, depression and insomnia. You can use the dried leaves of passionflower to make a soothing tea. Use one teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and enjoy. Drink three times per day or before bedtime to help promote more restful sleep.
