Under-eye puffiness occurs when the fat that helps support the upper eyelids moves to the lower lids as a part of the natural aging process, reports the Mayo Clinic. Fluid retention, lack of sleep and swollen blood vessels under the eye can also result in puffiness. If the condition is caused by aging, you may only diminish the effects. You can usually eliminate under-eye puffiness caused by external factors, however, by using natural and home remedies.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel combined with cucumber juice and witch hazel soothes the sensitive under-eye area and constricts blood vessels to reduce puffiness, according to Janice Cox in her book "Natural Beauty at Home." To make a cooling eye gel, combine 1 tbsp. aloe vera gel, 1 tsp. fresh cucumber juice and ¼ tsp. cornstarch in a small saucepan. Place in the microwave for about a minute to heat, but do not boil. Remove and mix in 1 tbsp. witch hazel extract. Allow the mixture to cool completely, and then dab a small amount of the gel under the eyes as needed. Store excess in a small jar in the refrigerator.
Potato Poultice
A poultice made from freshly grated potatoes may help reduce under-eye puffiness, according to Joan Wilen, author of "Folk Remedies That Work." To make, grate a small raw potato until you have about 4 tbsp. of shreds. Divide the shreds equally and place in the center of two small squares of cheesecloth or unbleached muslin. Fold the fabric over the grated potato and squeeze gently to release some of the juice. Lay in a comfortable position and place a poultice over each eye, making sure to cover the area under the eyes. Leave on for about 20 minutes before removing. Repeat daily or as needed.
Ice Water
Ice water helps shrink swollen blood vessels under the eyes, which reduces puffiness and dark circles. In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," Phyllis A. Balch recommends moistening a clean washcloth in a glass of ice water, and then applying as a compress directly to the eyes for 15 to 20 minutes once or twice daily. You can also dip two serving spoons in a glass of ice water or wrap ice cubes securely in cloth and apply directly to the eyes. If using an ice cube, however, only leave on for about five minutes at a time.
Dandelion Tea
Dandelion, a natural diuretic, may help flush out excess fluid that can cause under-eye puffiness. In the book "Natural Remedies: Nondrug Healing Strategies that Work Best," the Prevention Health Books staff suggests drinking a cup of dandelion tea three times a day to help alleviate puffy eyes. To make dandelion tea, steep 1 tsp. dried or 1 tbsp. fresh dandelion leaves in 1 cup boiling water for 10 minutes, strain and drink. Do not take dandelion if you currently take prescription diuretics or high blood pressure medication, or if you suffer from gallbladder disease.
