There is a mucous membrane in the bronchial passage of our lungs. Bronchitis is a medical condition that occurs when this membrane becomes inflamed due to a bacterial or viral infection. This causes long bouts of coughing with thick phlegm and shortness of breath.
Bronchitis becomes acute when, along with phlegm and coughing, there is infection in the upper respiratory system. Most of the time, acute bronchitis happens due to a viral infection in the lungs.
Acute bronchitis can be diagnosed by studying the patient's medical history and examining him thoroughly. There are no special tests required to determine whether a patient has acute bronchitis. Any qualified doctor will tell you if you are suffering from it by just listening to the sound of your lungs through a stethoscope and observing your symptoms.
After diagnosing the disease, doctors generally prescribe cough syrup and bronchodilator medication , which help the lungs expand and take in air. Apart from the prescription drugs, the patient is also advised to rest completely, as the body is generally under a significant amount of stress while suffering from this condition. The patient must also avoid smoking and inhaling any kind of harmful fumes, as this may irritate the lungs further and increase the coughing. The patient is also recommended to take regular fluids like soups and juice, and to drink fluids every few hours to avoid dehydration.
A patient who is suffering from acute bronchitis may also complain of body and muscle aches. Normally, aspirin or a similar drug can be taken to relieve these pains, but the patient must consult his doctor about taking painkillers if he is taking any other medication. Aspirin is not recommended for children.
While you are suffering from acute bronchitis, it is very important to take good care of yourself and make sure you don't spread your germs to other people in your house. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in minerals and vitamins. Also, do not share food or utensils with others, to avoid transferring germs.
