Things to Do in South Seattle

South Seattle contains some of the most interesting and diverse areas and attractions in Seattle. From major sports arenas to neighborhoods of ethnic diversity, the area south of downtown Seattle has something for everyone. Seattle is located in the northwest corner of the United States, and on what is known as the Pacific Rim, so influences from Asia and the Pacific predominate. Because of its temperate climate, Seattle and the neighborhoods in the south, are accessible year-round.

International District

Seattle's International District is located in south Seattle. Known by locals as the "I.D.," the district replaces what would have been a Chinatown in other cities. The diverse nationalities in the district include Japanese, Korean, Thai, Hmong, Vietnamese, Cambodian, as well as Chinese. Stores and shops that feature foods, supplies and tourist trinkets line the streets. Visitors can eat dim sum, buy traditional Japanese pottery, shop at an Asian fish market, or dine at any number of ethnic restaurants. Sushi, spring rolls, noodles and bubble tea await.

Safeco Field

Safeco Field is located south of downtown Seattle and is home to the Seattle Mariners major league baseball team. The field has a retractable roof so that fans can enjoy the games rain or shine. The baseball season runs from April to September, or later depending on the playoff status of the team. The "Safe" as it's known to locals provides easy handicap accessibility. Many food vendors sell appetizing food choices such as chocolate covered strawberries or "Ichiroll" sushi. The usual souvenir tee-shirts, baseballs, caps and other Mariner brand memorabilia is also for sale.

Pioneer Square

Pioneer Square in south Seattle was the original settlement in the downtown area. The three- and four-story brick buildings date back one hundred years. Yesler was the area's Skid Row, where logs from eastern forests slid down to the waiting ships in Seattle harbor. Tours take visitors to the Underground Seattle. Aside from the many restaurants and shops in the area, this neighborhood is also known for its nightlife and clubs. Many furniture shops also populate this neighborhood.

Union Station

Union Station is the home of Amtrak in south Seattle. The vintage station was restored in 2009. It is located close to the International District and Qwest Field.

Qwest Field

Qwest Field is the home of the Seattle football team, the Seahawks. During the team's off season, the field is used for other sporting events, as well as the Seattle Home Show, the Seattle Boat Show, the RV Show, and other large conventions and gatherings.
