Natural essential oils can help hair growth. Some oils normalize the sebaceous glands, helping to unclog pores in the scalp, while other oils' astringent properties clean and invigorate the scalp. Hair oils work to make hair grow in a variety of ways by cleaning, normalizing, stimulating and nourishing the scalp to encourage hair follicles to regrow hair. Massage plays an important role in this process too, as it increases circulation and blood flow to hair follicles.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba is a shrub (Simmondsia chinenis) native to western Mexico. It has a brown seed the size of a coffee bean that is pressed to get the oil. Native Americans have used it since the 1700's as a hair treatment, scalp treatment and hair restorative. Jojoba oil moisturizes the scalp and helps prevent hair loss. It is also used as carrier oil for other more astringent essential oils used for hair growth. Jojoba oil is similar to the sebum on the scalp. When the scalp produces too much or too little sebum, jojoba oil can either replace the lost oils or dissolve and remove excess sebum. Because of this, it is widely used in shampoos, notes the April 6, 2001 issue of CBS Money Watch Magazine.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil made from grapeseed extract increases circulation. It helps increase blood flow to the follicle and was used in a 1998 study reported in the November issue of the Archives of Dermatology, which combined grapeseed and five other oils to treat hair loss. The study showed positive results for hair regrowth.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is a very aromatic oil distilled from cananga odorata, var. genuine, or sometimes called "flower of flowers." It normalizes sebum that can build up, clog pores and cause hair loss. It also has a stimulating effect and can stabilize scalp sebum similar to jojoba oil. Ylang Ylang oil, combined with peppermint, coconut and anise oils, is an effective natural scalp solution to treat head lice, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is an antiseptic and helps clean and invigorate the scalp. It has been combined with other oils and used in clinical studies to treat hair loss, according to the National Institutes of Health. Lavender can cause skin irritation on sensitive skin. It may be poisonous if the essential oil is ingested. Lavender teas used with sedatives may increase drowsiness.
