Our skin loses firmness as we age. The decrease in collagen production causes it to lose elasticity and form wrinkles. But several perpetrators other than aging can cause wrinkles--genetics, sun exposure, smoking and pollution to name a few. Natural home remedies can decrease the likelihood of wrinkling.
Shun the Sun
The Mayo Clinic says that overexposure to ultraviolet light speeds the skin's aging process. Collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis layer of the skin break down when exposed to UV light. If staying out of the sun is not possible, wear a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays. Also, wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing when outdoors.
Smoking
The Mayo Clinic says that smoking is a cause of premature wrinkles. Nicotine shrinks blood vessels and impedes the flow of blood to your skin. Because blood transports nutrients and oxygen, they are unable to reach your skin, causing it to sag. Avoid second-hand smoke, as this can be as detrimental to your skin as smoking.
Anti-oxidant Rich Diet
The foods you consume can help minimize wrinkles from the inside out. Anti-oxidants help fight free radicals that promote wrinkles. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish and flaxseed aid in tissue repair. Vitamin E slows the aging of cells; sunflower seeds, nuts and spinach are great sources of this vitamin. Citrus fruits including grapefruit and oranges are rich in vitamin C. This promotes the production of collagen and elastin.
Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position may contribute to wrinkling, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Sleep lines can become etched on the skin's surface from your pillow. This happens mostly to those who sleep on their sides or face down. To avoid these types of lines, sleep on your back.
