Colon Rectal Cancer: Signs & Symptoms

The American Cancer Society explains that colon rectal cancer refers to cancer that develops in the last part of the digestive system. The colon's function is to absorb fluid from digested food and form solid waste. The fecal matter leaves the body through the rectum. Awareness of the warning signs and early detection offer the best prognosis against colon rectal cancer.

Change in Bowel Habits

Some symptoms of colon rectal cancer are shared by conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. However, changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation or difference in the consistency of the stool, that persist for several weeks are signs of colon rectal cancer. The Mayo Clinic recommends seeking medical attention if you experience a persistent change in bowel habits.

Blood in the Stool

According to the American Cancer Society, it can take 10 to 15 years for colon polyps to advance to colon rectal cancer. Another sign that demands medical attention is rectal bleeding. A person may notice dark stools or blood in the stool. Often, the stool appears normal but contains blood.

Abdominal Discomfort

A large tumor can partially or completely block the colon and cause abdominal symptoms. Abdominal discomfort, such as gas, cramps and pain, warns of colon rectal cancer. This discomfort is persistent. A person experiences the urge to have a bowel movement but does not feel relief after doing so.

Systemic Symptoms

The Mayo Clinic points out that many people do not experience symptoms in the early stages of colon rectal cancer. The symptom of fatigue and weakness may be overlooked as being caused by another condition, but it is associated with colon rectal cancer. Also, a person may have a noticeable and unexplained weight loss. According to an article on colon cancer in the Health Guide of the June 18, 2010, online copy of the New York Times, an unexplained low red blood cell count is another sign.
