Although Cleveland might not be the first choice for the health-conscious holiday traveler, a visit to the city doesn't mean you have to abandon your lifestyle. Indeed, Cleveland offers an abundance of fitness-focused activities and excursions that make it one of the easiest cities in which to stay active.
Walk
Regardless of which holiday you spend in Cleveland, taking a walking tour is one of the easiest ways to explore the city while staying active. Fortunately, downtown Cleveland's compact size makes traveling by foot convenient and inexpensive. One of the most popular walking tours is CityProwl (cityprowl.com), which provides downloadable audio tour files and maps of Cleveland neighborhoods and districts. Just upload the desired file to your mobile device, smartphone or computer and, as the company says, "prowl the city like a native."
Eat
A basic activity of any holiday is a meal, and your visit to Cleveland need not change this. Since its opening in 1840, the West Side Market has been a mainstay for Cleveland residents and visitors for its selection of fresh, healthy foods that celebrate the area's cultural diversity. The market houses more than 100 vendors offering everything from fresh seafood, meat and produce to baked goods to ready-to-eat meals.
Swim
Cleveland's location on the shores of Lake Eire make swimming a natural choice for any summer holiday. In addition to the public beaches in Headlands State Park, consider a trip to Geauga Lake's Water Kingdom. About 45 minutes from downtown Cleveland, Geauga Lake offers a variety of attractions such as a water-based basketball court/playground that are fun, family-friendly and fitness-oriented.
Toboggan
For a unique winter holiday experience, try tobogganing at the Cleveland Metropark's Chalet. The park runs two 1,000-foot ice chutes from the day after Thanksgiving to the first weekend of March. The chutes run even without snow. Visitors also have access to the chalet's lounge, restrooms and snack bar.
Ski and Snowboard
If you are a fan of winter sports, consider a trip to Alpine Valley just outside Cleveland. It has 72 acres for skiing, with 11 trails for learners, beginners, experts and extreme practitioners. Alpine Valley also has facilities for snowboarding, such as half-pipe and rails. You can buy passes by the day of for the season.
