Situated about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas in the Virgin River Valley among enormous mountains and desert terrain, Mesquite is the perfect launching point for a number of activities. Outdoor enthusiasts will discover ample opportunities for hiking, climbing, ATV and bike-riding, as well as golf and shooting. With Zion National Park, Great Basin National Park, Valley of Fire State Park and Lake Mead all within short range, Mesquite, Nev., offers a variety of environments and geological features to explore.
Hiking
Located 45 miles from Mesquite, Valley of Fire State Park makes an excellent place to hike with its many unique sandstone formations and ancient artifacts, all situated within the Mojave Desert. Hiking the trails of Valley of Fire, you will find campgrounds situated near a variety of attractions, such as Elephant Rock, the Seven Sisters red-rock formations as well as a variety of additional geological features and ancient Indian petroglyphs.
Climbing
While there are many great areas for rock climbing close to Mesquite, the Lime Kiln Canyon provides excellent climbing-rock with a variety of climbs just 20 minutes from the city. Still under development, the area is likely to be cheaper and less populated than other rock-climbing sites. However, climbers should be especially cautious and double-check all bolts and holds before applying weight. The spring and fall seasons offer ideal weather conditions; be sure to pack plenty of layers in the winter, where temperatures can drop significantly in the shade.
ATV and Bike Trailing
Throughout the surrounding desert and state parks, there is a wide selection of trails perfect for cycling, dirt-biking and ATV riding. If you are looking for a really interesting ride, take on the Gold Butte Back Country Byway, a dusty, 62-mile backwoods trail that runs straight through the desert and past Lake Mead, the Muddy Mountains as well as numerous rock formations and wildlife habitats. There is a starting point for the byway located just 5 miles south of Mesquite.
Additional Outdoor Activities
For those who wish to stay active in between hikes and climbs, there are a variety of additional outdoor activities to enjoy. Mesquite has six golf courses in the area, with interesting holes featuring desert terrain as well as rock and canyon obstacles that add a unique dimension to the game. For gun enthusiasts, nearby shooting ranges provide the perfect place to blow off some steam. For some relaxation afterward, head to a spa or grab a healthy, hearty meal at one of this growing resort city's many fine dining establishments.
Accomodations
Mesquite offers a host of options for accommodations, ranging from the more luxurious, $150-plus rooms at the CasaBlanca Resort and The Springs Mesquite to budget motel options at $50 or less in locations such as the Best Western Mesquite Inn. For gambling enthusiasts, accommodations are available at a handful of casinos. RV trailer parks are also located nearby.
