In some cultures, removing body hair is not important. In America, both men and women choose to remove hair from different parts of the body to meet cultural norms. Men tend to remove hair on their faces only, while women use hair removal methods for their underarms and legs, for shaping their brows, and even for the bikini area. There are many different hair removal options to choose from, some of which have longer-lasting effects than others.
Shaving
Shaving is one of the most common hair removal options in the United States. According to the website KidsHealth, shaving involves using a razor to take off only the top of the hair shaft, which is visible above the layer of skin. While shaving is generally an inexpensive method of hair removal, the effects only last one to three days, states KidsHealth. Shaving can be done quickly at home, but it can sometimes cause razor burn, ingrown hairs and cuts.
Waxing
Another hair removal option that is very popular in the United States is waxing, which can be done at home or in a salon. Waxing involves spreading a sticky wax on the skin, which attaches to the hair, and then pulling it off, taking the hair out at the root. According to the website KidsHealth, waxing results in smoother skin than does shaving, and the result lasts anywhere from three to six weeks. One of the drawbacks of waxing is that it is more expensive than shaving or using depilatories, and it is quite painful for some people.
Depilatories
Depilatories are creams or liquid solutions that remove hair by altering the protein structure of the hair in the area where applied. Depilatories are relatively cheap and can be purchased in grocery stores and drugstores. After applying the depilatory, you simply wash away the hair, and the effect lasts up to a few weeks. According to KidsHealth, depilatories can cause allergic reactions, rashes or inflammation of the skin in certain people.
Laser Method
Laser hair removal is a more permanent hair removal option that can only be done in doctors' offices and medical spas with nurses on staff. Laser hair removal uses a laser that sends heat to the hair follicle, destroying the follicle and preventing hair from growing back. The Mayo Clinic explains that after a series of six to eight treatments, the area can remain hair free for up to a year or more. Laser hair removal is the most expensive of the hair removal options, and it can cause side effects like scarring and scabbing, according to KidsHealth.
