While the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, or FWC, reports that archery typically has less accidents than most ball sports, care must still be taken to prevent injury when on the shooting line. Those participating in the sport of archery have to make sure they follow all the rules so that they---and those around them---are not hurt by an arrow. A Target Archery Marshall is usually present and archers should always follow his commands when it is their turn to take aim, says The Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA.
Remember the Danger
The SCA recommends that an archer should always remember the danger of their sport and be sure they follow all rules so that they and their fellow participants are safe. This means that a person at the shooting line should never have an arrow in place if someone is in front of the line. If anyone is present where they could be hit by an arrow, an archer should not discharge the arrow. When at the shooting line, arrow tips should be covered until they are ready be loaded and shot, says the SCA. Finally, archers must step back from the shooting line when they are done taking aim so that they are not injured by another shooters equipment.
Follow Instructions
When archers are at the shooting line, they should always be mindful of the directions being given by the Target Archery Marshall, advises the SCA. If they are told to hold their weapon, they must lower the bow and remove the arrow. In addition, participants must report potential problems to the Target Archery Marshall so that a person is not hit by an arrow or otherwise injured during the shooting session.
Stay Sober
The SCA says that a person should never be on the shooting line if they have had any alcohol or drugs recently. New Hope Recovery Center reports that being intoxicated can lead to poor coordination, impaired reaction time and problems with focusing. All of these things can lead to an accident when using a bow and arrow.
