Perhaps you want to bring your lackluster locks back to a previous state of fullness or you simply desire to have longer and thicker hair for the first time. A number of special tonics, shampoos and dietary supplements may promise to stimulate hair growth, oftentimes with disappointing results. Natural oils such as coconut, rosemary and lavender may actually treat hair loss, stimulate new hair growth and possible improve the overall look of your hair.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil provides nutrition and conditioning to the hair and may stimulate regrowth when hair has been damaged, according to the Organic Facts website. A study published in 2001 in the Journal of Cosmetic Science found coconut oil may have penetrating effects that can protect the hair from harm. The study was led by S.B. Ruetsch, of TRI/Princeton, in Princeton, New Jersey.
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil may help treat hair loss by fueling its growth, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The sweet smell of lavender makes it a popular ingredient in soaps and shampoos. Massaging lavender oil into your hair three times a week or using a spray bottle to apply it may promote hair growth, according to HomeRemediesForYou.com. Lavender oil may cause an allergic response in some people when it's absorbed into the skin. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea or vomiting.
Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil has been used for centuries to help hair grow, according to the UMMC. Applying a combination of rosemary oil and olive oil into the scalp may promote blood circulation and hair growth. Rosemary is generally considered safe with few side effects.
Evening Primose Oil
Hormone-related hair loss that may occur during pregnancy or menopause may benefit from evening primrose oil supplements. Taking 1,000mg of evening primrose oil three times a day may help regulate hormones and potentially reverse hair loss, according to MotherNature.com. Side effects are unlikely, but in rare cases, headaches, upset stomach and nausea may occur.
Combination Oils
Massaging a combination of oils into the scalp may effectively stimulate hair growth, notes UMMC. A Scottish study, published in the Archives of Dermatology found that massaging the scalp with a combination of thyme, cedarwood, lavender, rosemary and thyme promoted hair growth. The study was led by I.C. Hay of the Department of Dermatology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, in Foresterhill, Scotland.
