Newark is in northern New Jersey, and like most places in the state, is only a short trip away from the Atlantic Ocean beaches. The closest beaches range from 23 to 45 miles from Newark. Most of those beaches are in towns of the same names, and the towns often offer restaurants, amusement parks and other beach-side entertainment. The beaches also offer a number of activities to help you stay fit and active, from surfing to beach volleyball.
Closest Beaches
Five of the closest beaches to Newark are Coney Island Beach, the Sandy Hook area of the Gateway National Recreation Area, Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Sea Bright Public Beach and Sea Girt Beach. Coney Island Beach in New York City is the closest beach to Newark in terms of miles, but it could end up taking longer to get there because of heavy city traffic.
Swimming
Swimming provides a great way to stay healthy. Add the waves of the Atlantic Ocean to the mix and you just may burn more calories than normal. Each of the five beaches is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer. Sandy Hook and Sea Girt Beach allow swimming only when the beaches are guarded.
Surfing
Surfing provides a good full-body workout as your balance skills are tested; the beaches near Newark often provide good waves to do so. Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park has a designated surfing area. Surfing is also permitted at designated sections of Sandy Hook and Sea Girt.
Beach Sports/Activities
Even if swimming is not your preferred form of recreation, a day at Newark-area beaches still offers the opportunity for exercise. All of the nearby beaches are sandy, and a walk or jog in the sand adds resistance to your workout. Coney Island provides recreational opportunities such as beach volleyball, basketball and handball courts. Sandy Hook has a 5-mile pathway for biking and jogging that offers views of the water. Regardless of the beach you go to, if the crowds aren't bad, you can find a space to toss a football or disk around.
Costs
Sea Girt, Seven Presidents and Sea Bright all charge for entrance. Seasonal passes are available, if you plan to visit frequently. Coney Island Beach and the beaches of Sandy Hook do not charge admission; however, expect to pay for parking.
