The aloe vera herb, Aloe barbadensis, is a perennial, medicinal plant native to southern and eastern Africa. The use of aloe vera juice dates back thousands of years, and has been used for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Aloe vera juice, obtained from the fleshy pulp of the aloe leaf, is the form in which this herb is commonly recommended for internal use. Holistic practitioners claim that a number of benefits can be derived from drinking aloe vera juice.

Supports Gastrointestinal Function

According to a scientific research paper published in Preventive Magazine titled "Effect of Orally Consumed Aloe Vera Juice," ingesting aloe vera juice helps to improve gastro-intestinal function. Authored by Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine, the paper reports that individuals suffering from indigestion, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and excess stomach acid have reported relief from these conditions after drinking aloe vera juice.

Relieves Constipation

Aloe vera juice is noted for its stool-softening properties, and has traditionally been used as an herbal remedy for constipation, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr T. Ombrello, of the Union County College Biology Department in Cranford, New Jersey, notes that aloin, an active chemical compound in aloe vera juice, has strong laxative properties that are beneficial in the treatment of constipation.

Soothes Peptic Ulcers

Drinking aloe vera juice may have a soothing effect on peptic ulcers, according to Jacqueline Longe in her book, "The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine." Longe notes that this benefit may be attributed to the inhibiting effect that the aloe juice has on Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria responsible for peptic ulcers.

Manage Diabetes

Drinking aloe vera juice can help lower blood sugar levels, which is beneficial in the management of type 2 diabetes. This form of diabetes is a health disorder that is characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), preliminary research studies indicate that drinking aloe vera juice may help to reduce blood sugar levels for people who suffer from type 2 diabetes. The UMMC notes, however, that more research is needed to determine its efficacy..
