Many herbalists and naturalists tout the benefit of total body cleanses. Medical science is still mixed on whether colon cleansing has any real benefits, but for some it doesn't matter; it is still a way to detox the body. There are some herbs with antiseptic and laxative properties that help with total body colon cleansing. Before taking any herbal colon cleansing remedy, consult with your doctor first.

Peppermint

Peppermint can be useful for many ailments, including intestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and gastric spasms. According to Medline Plus, there is promising results from the clinical trials on peppermint's use in IBS and intestinal disorders. Potential side effects include eye irritation, contact dermatitis, rash, mouth sores, heartburn, dizziness, headache, tremor and slow heart rate.

Aloe

Aloe is a gel that when taken internally is good for constipation because of its laxative effects. Clinical trials have shown that it works well in a laxative capacity due to the component aloin, according to Medline Plus. Aloe soothes the intestinal lining, according to Holistic Health, and is added to some colon cleansing products for this relief. There is an allergy warning and a potential risk of side effects that include cramping and diarrhea.

Dandelion

Dandelion is generally known as a common yard weed; however, it is also used for digestive problems and as a liver and kidney tonic. It is added to some colon cleansing remedies due to these detoxing properties. Possible side effects include diarrhea, allergy and stomach upset, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM.

Cascara

Cascara sagrada is used in many colon cleansing remedies due to its laxative properties. It relieves constipation and stimulates the large intestine, according to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. It is a strong laxative in many over-the-counter and internet detox kits; however, the Food and Drug Administration does not list it as safe.
