Neutrogena claims its sensitive skin sunblock is oil-free, non-irritating, non-greasy and won't clog pores. It states that the vitamins included prevent damage from sun exposure. Available in SPF ratings of 30 and 60, Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock is purported to work without chemical sunscreens. There are 30 ingredients included in this product.

Active Ingredient

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunblock lotion contains titanium dioxide in a 9.1 percent concentration. Titanium dioxide is listed as a non-irritating sunblock ingredient by “Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.” It protects skin from receiving UV rays produced by the sun.

Emollients and Thickeners

Emollients are moisturizing ingredients that help keep the skin soft and supple. The emollients included in Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock include stearic acid, trimethylolpropane triethylhexanoate, neopentyl glycol dioctanoate and isopropyl c12 15 pareth 9 carboxylate. Water is a product included to provide instant moisture and to add texture to the product. Thickeners give the sunblock a rich, creamy texture. Thickeners included in Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sublock include C12 15 alkyl benzoate, carbomer and cetearyl alcohol. These ingredients also serve, to an extent, as emollients as outlined in “Cosmetics Unmasked.” Glycerin thickens the sunblock and is an emollient with hygroscopic properties. It draws water from the air to the skin.

Stabilizers and Preservatives

Preservatives prolong the shelf life of a product by preventing a buildup of fungi, bacteria and microorganisms. Preservatives included in Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock lotion include butylparaben, methylparaben, isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben and phenoxyethanol. These chemicals are anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-baceterial, according to “Cosmetics Unmasked.” Stabilizing ingredients keep the product from degrading over time. Iron hydroxide and disodium EDTA keep the ingredients from spoiling.

Antioxidants and Vitamins

Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock lotion contains antioxidants, substances that prevent a buildup of free-radicals on the skin. Free-radicals are a waste product of cellular metabolism, caused when oxygen interacts with the skin, a process outlined in “Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.” There are three antioxidant ingredients in Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock: butylated hydroxytuluene, or BHT, green tea leaf ectract and vitamin E, listed as tocopherol. The sunblock also contains two forms of vitamin B5, panthenol and calcium pantothenate. Vitamin B5 acts as a moisturizer.

Emulsifiers and Surfactants

When emulsification occurs, oil and water mix together without separating. Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock lotion contains two ingredients that work as emulsifiers: steareth 2 and neopentyl glycol diiostearate. Surfactants change the way water interacts with the product. The surface tension of the water is decreased, allowing Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock to glide onto the skin. Potassium cetyl phosphate and steareth 21 are surfactants included in this product.

Other Ingredients

Continuous coverage is important in a sunblock. The ingredient acrylates C10 30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer forms a film on the skin that allows Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock to work all day. Aluminum hydroxide works similarly, according to “Cosmetics Unmasked.” It protects skin, allowing the sunblock to work as intended. Triethanolamine regulates the pH level of the product, ensuring the product is not too acidic or alkaline due to the nature of the ingredients. Butylene glycol enhances the mixing abilities of the ingredients contained in Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin sunblock. It ensures that any chemicals that should dissolve, do.
